'We want to help': Somersworth's Indonesian Festival raises needed COVID relief funds

Aug 22, 2021

SOMERSWORTH — The annual Indonesian Festival, held for years in the Hilltop City, was special Saturday for a number of reasons. For one, it was celebrated for the first time at the new Indonesian Cultural Center at 156 High St.

As always, Indonesian food was a big draw and the delicious scents wafted down the street. Music, dancing and brightly colored clothing were everywhere.

This year because the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the Indonesian islands very hard, Raychel said, a fundraiser was part of the event to help send money and supplies.

"Just $5 can purchase a food pantry package to help a family," Raychel said. "We hope to send out 2,500 packages after the festival, and our next goal is 5,000 more. There are runaway outbreaks in the islands right now, and we want to help."
